This is a Free Seminar

How old were you in the 1970s and '80s? Did you live in a city in the United States during that time? If you read the newspapers, listened to the radio, or watched TV, you may have heard of my seminar and me.

I conducted public seminars known as Biocentrix Training in Self-Hypnosis. Most of the major metropolitan areas were on my circuit. In addition to being interviewed frequently—journalists and other media types love the sensationalism (in their perception) of hypnosis—the seminars were heavily advertised in newspapers, radio and television.

I would conduct about 35 day-long seminars each year. These were supplemented by a number of evening programs. Typical attendance varied from city to city, ranging from a low of about 60 in smaller areas to over 200 in the larger cities.

(Almost all of these were week-end programs because at the time I was teaching at a Denver college, had a small private practice on the side, and took in laundry.)

From these numbers you can see that 30,000 is a conservative estimate of the number of people who have attended my seminars. I know there were more, I just don't know how many more.

Here is another conservative statement, one that probably will not surprise you: When you conduct what is essentially the same program that many times with the kinds of feedback you get from that many people, you eventually get it right!

And that seminar was right! It became a truly great seminar because of all the feedback and participation of all those great people. I wish I could say it was my genius that made that seminar what it was, but I'm not one and I can't. The credit goes to everyone who went through the program. I was always sorry that the early participants could not all go through the seminar in later years to see what they had helped it become.

I loved doing that seminar but I grew to hate the travel, especially after airline deregulation. I would still be doing it if it were not for the travel.

And now, thanks to Biocentrix and this Web site, I have put the seminar here in the Hypnotica Home Page. Think of it as an electronic seminar. Or a cyber seminar.

Everything is here. Nothing has been left out, although I have updated the material, added some stuff, and generally loosened it up a little. After all, we are not facing time restrictions here. In a seminar there are only a limited number of hours in which to orally cover everything. Or as much as possible, anyway. Without that kind of time limitation I have added a lot of material we could never do in the seminars.

Like I said, everything is here.

Everything is here, that is, except me. This means you lose out on two counts: one, you don't have the benefit of my radiant presence insouciant humor genius brilliance incredibly amusing hugely insightful [never mind]; and two, one (and I'm serious about this one) you don't have me there to conduct a hypnotic induction for you. But we can remedy that, and in a way that is probably better: with a cassette tape. My induction talk as well as several other useful training tapes are available (CLICK HERE to order or to learn more about all of these materials, or here to read about my Hypnotic Induction Tape).

Charles E. Henderson, Ph.D.

I am the one represented by the "I" and "me"in the Hypnotica™ Home Page. I was born in Dumas (ding-dong land), Texas, and grew up in Texhoma, Oklahoma. Have you seen the movie, "The Last Picture Show"? That movie was not filmed in Texhoma, but it was made in a town not far from there, and it looks remarkably like Texhoma. "It wasn't the end of the earth, but you could see it from there" (Johnny Carson).

As a kid I was a dumb redneck, rough around the edges and to the core, too. Sort of tough, boxed and played football, and played solo clarinet in the high school band just to keep everyone as confused as I was. Junior class president (no one knows why). Not particularly popular except with underdogs and widder wimmen.

Best friends were Rex Hale and Bruce Hook. Rex grew up to be an English teacher and Oklahoma Small Farmer of the Year at least once. (You have to be versatile to survive in tough country like the Panhandle. That's either Panhandle; the Texas Panhandle or the Oklahoma Panhandle—we lived in both of them.) Bruce was a quiet, scholarly kid who read all the time, the most sedate of the three of us. He never bothered with sports or much of anything else. He was clearly destined to become, say, a small-town merchant and lead a quiet, uneventful life. Yeah, right! He became a US Air Force fighter pilot and had all kinds of adventures.

Most influential teacher in Texhoma: Paul Huntington, hands down.

I left the panhandle with my parents when we moved to the Denver, Colorado area when I was between my junior and senior years.

High school: attended senior year and graduated (barely) from Littleton High School, Littleton, Colorado (yea, go Lions), a suburb of Denver. My senior year was a lot of fun and included a lot of unorthodox education totally untended by the faculty or school board. I played solo chair in the band and dated Miss Littleton for a short period while her fiancé was away in the Marine Corps (told you I was not real bright). Taught ballroom dancing part-time at the Dale Dance Studio on Welton Street in downtown Denver. Had a rock trio that played Friday and Saturday nights at a 3.2 dive just off Denver's skid row called Joe's Place. Continued with the dive-boogie after graduating. I had a lot of fun working at Joe's Place.

That really was the name of the joint. The owner's name was Al but there was a Joe. He was the cop who worked the floor on weekends. He called me Lawrence Welk. I didn't like it but I never said anything about it because he had a gun and I didn't.

Played football and lettered at Littleton. Also made all-conference and honorable mention all-state thanks to Tubo Anderson. The player lists distributed to the Denver area press corps had my name twice, once by my correct jersey number and a second time by Tubo's number. I guess no one caught it because of the similarity between our names, Henderson and Anderson. That error lasted all season and I got the credit for everything either one of us did. Tubo was really good. He should have been the one to get the honors. Sorry, Tubo.

It was a good thing all of our games were on Thursday nights because I worked at Joe's Place on Fridays. But I still had to miss things, like the Junior-Senior prom, because those functions were always on weekends. My buddy Bob Branch took my girl Ginger to the prom. As a favor to me. Hmmm.

I wonder what ever happened to Joyce Harrington? Eleanor Pifer? Joan Waugh? Dave Grusin? (I know what happened to him. He became a world-famous musician--yes, that Dave Grusin. But I'm just name-dropping here because I really didn't know him. He did go to Littleton High, but he graduated a year or two ahead of me. However, I did know and play in the band with his younger brother, Don. Unfortunately Don didn't, and probably still doesn't, like me.) Ben Haley? Buck Kamphausen? Bev Maloy?

Actually I know what became of Joyce Harrington, too. She is a successful mystery writer (your local library probably has several of her books), advertising executive and mother, and she hobnobs with lots of interesting people in New York City, where she lives. A very smart, talented and attractive lady. Way to go, Joyce!

On with the vita: BA, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA. Flunked out the first year with one B, a few Cs and Ds, and 17 (count 'em, SEVENTEEN) hours of F!). Joined the Army, started in the infantry, was accepted to OCS, did not go and ended up instead traveling Europe as a musician (USO tours in the 357th Special Services out of Frankfurt; symphonic music with the 7th Army Symphony in Heidelberg; dance, concert and marching band, 8th Division, Bad Kreuznach). Got out, returned to US, eventually went back and finished my BA. Did it right this time with a good GPA. Worked part-time in Kurt Jafay's portrait studio for a while, then sold everything from grave sites and encyclopedias to pots and pans to make it through college.

Worked on an MA in anthropology at the University of New Mexico, but didn't write the thesis. I was too worn down by the unremitting horror of everything that my white forefathers had done to my red forefathers. The Biocentrix store keeps site free. Would you consider a purchase? Click here to go to Biocentrix Store. (I'm part Native American; exactly which part varies depending upon whom I'm telling.)

Went back to psychology and communication and finally got my MA and Ph.D. at the University of Denver, Colorado, USA. Taught (Community College of Denver, Arapahoe Community College, University of Denver), wrote some books, started a company (Biocentrix Corporation), conducted a lot of seminars all over the country (mostly in self hypnosis, but also in areas like assertiveness training, communication in-services for teachers, public speaking, mnemonics, and occupational health and safety).

Several years ago I feigned post-modernist conversion, deconstructed myself and gave up teaching as my contribution to affirmative action. I guess I could have gone all the way and killed myself to become a dead white male of European descent, but there are limits . . .

Now I live in New York with my wife Chris and our cat, Schatzi. We "like it a lot," as Harlan Ellison once said about living in LA (go figure!). I write, speak and do some publishing and editing to make ends meet. Sometimes the ends come together nicely. Other times I can't even find them. (I stole that last line, too, but for the life of me I can't remember where.)

Why I've asked you here...

Sometimes I'm asked why I have gone to all the trouble of putting up this free Web site. The easy answer is, I'm giving something back. Perhaps a little closer to the truth might be, it keeps me off the street and out of the pool hall ("billiard parlor" for those more refined among you). The latter sounds more realistic to an unreconstructed cynic like myself—anything else sets off the BS alarm.
Whatever my reasons, enjoy!
