Where to Begin with Self Hypnosisby Charles E. Henderson, Ph.D. | ||
Self hypnosis is a skill and, as with any skill, it is best to learn it properly with each step in the correct order. This is a broad outline of steps to take in developing self hypnotic skills. |
|
Step 1. Pick your most important objectives or goals. It is best to start out with just one or two goals, preferably objectives that can be measured. Some examples of objective measures that reflect how well you are doing are number of days you haven't had a cigarette for quitting smoking; pounds lost per week for weight control; or grade improvement in academic objectives.

| Step 2. Start practicing self hypnosis. Use your own induction process (or an induction tape). If you are having trouble getting relaxed enough to practice self hypnosis, work on your relaxation.
| ||
| Step 3. Formulate appropriate suggestions and apply them during self hypnosis, and at any other appropriate times. Autoquestioning can help you get subconscious "clearance" to use your suggestions. It can also help uncover the subconscious dynamics of whatever it is you want to make, break or change.

That's basically it. Establish a schedule for your practice times and be sure to keep records. And be forewarned about the Myth of Displaced Cause: This is what sets in in your mind after you have achieved your goal. It is the belief that the changes would have happened anyway, that the self hypnosis had nothing to do with it. This is a common misconception and it is understandable because achieving anything with self hypnosis feels natural. It just seems like it was not "made" to happen, so it must not have been the hypnosis. Watch out for this phenomenon because it is frequently the cause of setbacks after initial success.
